Which cosmetic ingredients should you avoid in pregnancy?
Short answer
The ingredients most commonly avoided during pregnancy are retinoids (retinol, tretinoin, retinyl palmitate), hydroquinone, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, phthalates, thioglycolates in chemical straighteners, and high-dose salicylic acid peels. The usual avoid list

- High-dose salicylic acid — leave-on peels rather than a low-percentage cleanser
Why 'precautionary' is the honest word
For most of these, the evidence is not a demonstrated harm from cosmetic use — it is an absence of safety data in pregnancy combined with a plausible mechanism, which is enough for regulators and clinicians to recommend caution. That distinction matters: avoiding retinol during pregnancy is standard advice, but it does not mean a person who used a retinol serum before knowing they were pregnant has caused harm.
