Gluten-free scanner: what a barcode app can and cannot tell you
Short answer
A gluten-free scanner reads a product barcode, looks the product up in an ingredient database, and flags gluten-containing ingredients on the label. It cannot detect gluten in the food itself, cannot see cross-contamination, and cannot know about a reformulation the database has not caught up with. For coeliac disease, it is a shortlisting tool, not a safety test.
Start with what it cannot do
Every gluten scanner on the market — this one included — works the same way: barcode in, database record out, ingredient list parsed for gluten sources. Nothing in that chain touches the food. A scanner that says a product looks gluten-free is telling you what the label says, and that is a different claim from the food being safe for you.
If you have coeliac disease, the four gaps below are the ones that matter, and no barcode app closes any of them.
- Cross-contamination — a product with no gluten ingredients can still be made on shared equipment. Only a certification (GFCO, Coeliac UK's crossed grain) or the manufacturer can speak to that.
- 'May contain' statements — voluntary in most markets, inconsistently applied, and often absent from database records even when they are on the packet.
- Reformulation — manufacturers change recipes without changing packaging design. A database entry can lag by months.
- Missing or wrong entries — Open Food Facts is community-maintained and open. That is why coverage is broad and free, and also why any single record can be incomplete.
How the scan actually works
Scanning a barcode matches the product against Open Food Facts and reads its parsed allergen taxonomy rather than string-matching English words on a label. That matters more than it sounds: wheat appears as blé, trigo, Weizen and 小麦 depending on where the packet was printed, and gluten hides behind malt extract, brewer's yeast, hydrolysed wheat protein, semolina, spelt, farro, triticale and modified wheat starch.
The allergens you tell the app to watch for are marked on every result, so the gluten line is the one you see first rather than one row among fifteen.
Where a scanner is genuinely useful
- Triage in an aisle — narrowing twelve candidate products to two worth reading properly
- Foreign packaging, where the label is in a language you do not read
- Catching the non-obvious sources: malt vinegar, soy sauce, stock cubes, seasoning blends
- Keeping a household list consistent when more than one person is doing the shopping

- When the database entry looks thin or the product is unfamiliar, assume the app knows less than the packet does

- How accurate is a gluten-free scanner app?
- Accurate about the label, silent about the food. It reflects the ingredient list in its database, so it is as current as that record and as complete as the label. It cannot detect gluten, cannot see shared equipment, and will not know about a recipe change the database has not recorded.
- Can a scanner app detect gluten in food?
- No. Detecting gluten in food requires a chemical test — portable gluten sensors exist and are a separate class of product with their own accuracy debate. A barcode app reads a database record, which is a claim about the label rather than a measurement of the food.
- Is a scanner app safe to rely on if I have coeliac disease?
- Not on its own. Coeliac organisations consistently give the same advice: use scanner apps to narrow choices, then verify with the packet and with certification marks. That is our position too, and it is why the limits are at the top of this page rather than the bottom.
